Intraocular lens–capsular bag imaging with ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography

Abstract: The improved resolution makes UHR OCT a powerful tool in anterior segment imaging and evaluation of the capacity of IOL materials and models to induce capsular bag adhesion. Ultrahigh-resolution OCT may also help in determining the area of origin of PCO after cataract surgery.

“…The anatomic relationship between the IOL and capsular bag has been evaluated by different methods. 15,[19][20][21] Slit-lamp observation after maximum pupil dilation showed 4 stages of capsular bend formation. 20 The contact between the IOL, and the anterior and posterior lens capsule always progresses from the periphery to the center.…”

“…In the field of OCT instruments, further improvements in axial resolution have been reported 3 13. To date, the highest axial resolution of 1.4 μm has been achieved by Linnola et al for intraocular lens and capsular bag imaging in vitro 14. Nevertheless, the tomograms presented there exhibit an inferior quality in terms of the number of details that can be distinguished, compared with the tomograms in the present study, probably because they used the much slower technology of time-domain OCT.…”

“…15,16 The application of an ultra-broad bandwidth light source has enabled imaging of the IOL and the capsular bag with 1.4 mm axial and 3.0 mm transverse resolution and an acquisition time of 4 milliseconds per A-scan. 17 However, to date the results of only in vitro studies have been published. 17 Another technique recently introducted is SOCT.…”
