Intranasal temperature and humidity profile in patients with nasal septal perforation before and after surgical closure

Abstract: Common complaints of patients with a nasal septal perforation are crusting, dryness and bleeding. As shown previously, intranasal humidity values are significantly lower in patients with a septal perforation compared with healthy volunteers. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of surgical closure of septal perforations on intranasal temperature and humidity, and to evaluate changes in clinical symptoms after surgery. Ten patients with septal perforations were included in the study. Intranasal … Show more

“…There were no significant differences in the values of relative humidity and temperature between the right and the left nasal cavity in previous studies, indicating that the state of mucosal swelling alone is not responsible for air conditioning [17,18,22]. In addition, AKERLUND and BENDE [23] did not find a correlation between the nasal mucosal temperature and nasal airway resistance due to mucosal swelling.…”

“…The suction probe of the sensor allowed humidity recording at defined intranasal sites in the anterior segment in the centre of the air stream without interruption of nasal breathing. Numerous previous studies showed that the humidity sensor used is suitable for in vivo measurements in the human nasal cavity at defined detection sites [17][18][19]. Nasal resistance was measured using AAR.…”

“…2 Nasal septal surgery is one of the most common causes of septal perforation. 4 The symptoms such as nasal crusting, epistaxis, nasal obstruction, noisy breathing, or whistling may be associated with nasal septal perforation depending on the location and size of the perforation. 2 Surgical closure of septal perforations is a particularly challenging operation.…”

“…Ein operativer Verschluss der Perforation vermag die reduzierte Erw ä rmung und Befeuchtung wiederherzustellen. So konnte in einer nachfolgenden Studie gezeigt werden, dass die Temperatur und Feuchte nach dem erfolgreichen operativen Verschluss der Perforation signifi kant zunahm [137] .…”
