Intramuscular capillary hamartoma of the tongue

Abstract: Intramuscular vascular lesions in the tongue are rare and are usually the capillary form of haemangioma. A case is described of a lingual mass that resembled intramuscular haemangioma but had unique histological features that do not appear to have been described previously. The term intramuscular capillary hamartoma is suggested to describe it.

“…Within the oral cavity, endogenous elements that might result in hamartomatous proliferations include smooth muscle (2, 3), vessels (4), nerves, lymphatics, skeletal muscle (5), fat (6), salivary tissue (7), and epithelium (8). Choristomatous elements in the oral cavity might include bone (9), cartilage (10), glial tissue (11, 12), and skin appendages (13).…”

“…It is exceedingly rare to find focal AVM within the substance of the tongue. However, distinguishing small AVM from various other soft tissue tumors and vascular anomalies of the tongue can be difficult 5–7 . Because of the progressive and destructive enlargement of AVMs along with their inherent surgical risks, accurate diagnoses of lingual AVMs is critical.…”

“…Hamartoma is a benign tumor of excessive growth in which there is presence of normal tissue components of the affected organ, arranged in a disordered way. The vast majority of lingual hamartomas reported were among the pediatric population [3][4][5][6][7][8] with only a few in the adults, mainly in women [1,[9][10][11][12].…”
