Intralesional curettage of central low-grade chondrosarcoma: A midterm follow-up study

Abstract: Extended intralesional curettage has the benefits of good MSTS score, shorter operative time, shorter hospital stay, and lower complication rate without increasing local recurrence in central low-grade chondrosarcoma. For central low-grade chondrosarcoma, we suggest extended curettage to decrease soft tissue damage and surgical risk.

“…3,13e17 Adjuvant therapies adopted varied: phenol, cryosurgery, and cauterization with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) packing are among the most common adjuvant therapies for chondrosarcoma after intralesional resection. 4,13,19,21,25,26,28,35,36 Our meta-analysis showed that intralesional resection does not significantly increase the risk of local recurrence with or without adjuvant therapies. Phenol plus ethanol and cryosurgery were reported to be equally effective as adjuvant therapies for low-grade chondrosarcoma.…”

“…Functional outcome was assessed by MSTS score in most current studies. 13,14,17,28,34 We did not conduct a pooled analysis because of the lack of sufficient data. Resection with wide surgical margin has been associated with poor functional outcome and morbidity.…”

“…In comparing the clinical features of ACT and enchondroma, pain is the only constant feature deemed in favor of ACT by almost all the studies [14,15,17]. Errani et al argued pain as a differentiating feature, as they found it more frequent in enchondroma than in ACT.…”
