Intradermal thumbtack needle buried Neiguan (P6) point for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing craniotomy: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

Abstract: IntroductionPostoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is among the most common adverse reactions following anaesthesia and surgery. Recent clinical studies have reported that the average incidence is about 30%, while in patients specifically undergoing neurosurgery, the incidence can be as great as 73%. Studies also suggest that its occurrence increases the risk of intracranial haematoma and haemorrhage. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of intradermal thumbtack needle buried Neiguan … Show more

“…The therapy has the characteristics of "minimally invasive, shallow thorn, micro-needle feeling, long-stay needle ,non-toxic side effects, low cost and simple operation",patients can complete it at home under the guidance of professional physicians. The implantation of it can last for 24 hours [35] which is more suitable for chronic intractable diseases or often painful diseases with long retention time include FC. Therefore, we would like to use it as an intervention.…”

“…The SEIRIN 1 brand press-pins, manufactured by Japan's Qingling Co., Ltd. and commonly used in this therapy, are shaped like thumbtacks and are also called pyonex or thumbtack needles. Different needle models (0.2 mm × 1.2-1.8 mm) are selected according to the body type of the patients [13,14]. IPT is performed by intracutaneously inserting the needle into specific acupoints for a set period and applying intermittent pressure to the needle handle.…”

“…Compared to acupuncture, the press needle body is smaller and slender, which can reduce pain and prolong the therapeutic effect through longer needle retention. 19 Therefore, it is less traumatic, more acceptable to patients, and more convenient for clinical use. 20 Although the press needle has been increasingly used to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing craniotomy, 19 no trials have examined the effects of the press needle on CINV and retching.…”

This randomized controlled trial aimed to assess the efficacy of press needle treatment in preventing CINV and retching in patients with gastrointestinal cancer after FOLFOX chemotherapy.…”
