Intradermal injection of Fluorouracil versus triamcinolone in localized vitiligo treatment

Abstract: Summary Background Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease with a prevalence of 1.22% in Egypt. Intralesional steroids use in localized vitiligo treatment still a matter of debate. Fluorouracil was tried in vitiligo treatment after lesion dermabrasion, ablative laser, or micro‐needling. The study aimed to compare the efficacy of intradermal fluorouracil and triamcinolone acetonide without any adjuvant therapy in localized vitiligo treatment. Patients and methods Sixty patients with localized non‐segmental stable vit… Show more

“…26,27 It has a worldwide prevalence of 1%, it occurs mostly before the age of 20 and affects both sexes equally. 4,[28][29][30][31] The loss of melanocytes caused by vitiligo can be treated with microneedling. The latter can potentially stimulate melanocytes and skin pigmentation by creating microinjuries, which leads to the release of growth factors.…”

“…These patches occur mostly on extremities and are known to be resistant to conventional therapies, hence the importance of finding an effective treatment modality for these difficult‐to‐treat areas 26,27 . “…Since then, several studies have shown the efficacy of 5-FU in the treatment of vitiligo using different methods of application, such as after skin ablation by laser combined with phototherapy [232], after dermabrasion [233] and by combining it with microneedling [234,235]. A more recent trial demonstrated that in localized NSV, intradermal 5-FU showed better overall improvement compared with intradermal triamcinolone [236]. Its effects were maintained for 6 months, whereas that of triamcinolone stopped at 1 month after the last injection.…”

“…The chosen patches were subjected to intralesional injection of 5-fluorouracil 5% solution (50 mg/mL). At each point, 0.05-0.1 ml was injected with 1 cm apart using insulin syringe [8]. The procedure was repeated every 2 weeks for each patient until improvement reached or for 3 months maximum.…”
