“…This represents only the second reported case of an antenatally detected craniopharyngioma (Freeman et al, 1988;Snyder et al, 1986). Although four other cases of intracranial tumours have b,een detected in utero by ultrasonography (Crade, 1982;Vinters et al, 1982;HofTand Mackay, 1980;Kirkinen et a/., 1982) and one by computed tomography (Kirkinen ef a/., 1982), this is the first instance in Mrhich MRI has been utilized. The MR images combine the advantage of localizing masses and defining their relationship to the surrounding brain parenchyma without biological hazard of fetal radiation exposure (Fishbein, 1988).…”

“…The prognosis of congenital brain tumours presenting in infancy has generally been poor, with almost uniform mental retardation and severe neurological handicaps occurring in those infants who survive surgery during the neonatal period. The other four reported cases of antenatally detected intracranial tumors were teratomas: two of these were stillborn (Vinters et al, 1982; Kirkinen et a/., I982), one succumbed within the first few minutes of life (Hoff and Mackay, 1980), and the other died 2 h after birth (Crad 'e, 1982). The previously reported case of a craniopharyngioma which was detected in utero lived for 3 days.…”

“…All of these cases were tera tomas, and all were diagnosed in the third trimester. In one case, the fetus was stillborn at 31 weeks, and the other 3 infants died in the immediate neonatal period [14][15][16][17],…”
