Intracranial pressure and cerebrospinal fluid outflow conductance in healthy subjects

Abstract: Conductance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) outflow (Cout) is an important parameter to be considered in patients with CSF circulation abnormalities. In patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus it is the single most important parameter in determining if the patient needs CSF shunting. The lower normal limit for Cout has been estimated from the effect of shunting in patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus, from patients retrospectively reevaluated after recovering from illness, and from patients with known … Show more

“…This person was a 45-year-old woman with bilateral papilledema of unknown origin, and had complaints of headache and symptoms of "mental insufficiency" for a period of 2 years after acute meningoencephalitis. Most subsequent authors 1,[5][6][7]12 have performed estimations of the ICP based on pressure measurements obtained by lumbar puncture. Some investigations were performed on healthy volunteers, while others included patients suspected of CSF dynamic disturbances, and subsequently were classified as "probably" normal.…”

“…The non-linear vascular compliance is given by β = 2 as representative of the range 1 < β <3 given in the literature Jones et al, 2001Jones et al, ,2002Mandeville et al, 1999;Sheth et al, 2004b). Finally, P A =60 mmHg for the 30-μm arteriole blood pressure, P V =25 mmHg for the 35-μm venule blood pressure (Lipowsky, 2005), and the intracranial pressure, P IC =10 mmHg (Albeck et al, 1991;Alperin et al, 2000).…”

“…But in this section, an injection test can not be done, considering morbidity of a surgical act on healthy people. Consequently, we design the cerebral SAS and cerebral ventricles compliances to obtain a pressure amplitude between 1 mmHg and 3 mmHg, that corresponds to physiological values [21,1].…”
