Intracranial penetrating glass injury: A case report

Abstract: A case of penetrating head injury caused by glass is reported. Rarely does this material cause such an injury. Most of the intracranial foreign bodies occur around the orbit, frontal sinus, nasal and temporal area. Intracranial penetration of glass to the parietal region is rare due to the hardness and thickness of overlying parietal bone. Other reports of this unusual type of head injury are reviewed. Management and possible complications of this type of injury are discussed.

“…1,2,[5][6][7] As per the literature, intracranial penetration by foreign bodies occur most commonly through the orbit, nose, or frontal sinus. 4,8,9 Rarely, penetrating injuries can occur due to glass of an automobile window. Moreover, penetrating injury due to multiple pieces of tempered glass in an extremely hard frontal bone has not been reported previously.…”

“…A biochemical cascade begins when a mechanical force disrupts the normal cell integrity, producing the release of numerous enzymes, phospholipids, excitatory neurotransmitters, Calcium & free oxygen radicals that propagate further cell damage. 9 Apart from CSF leak, a common complication of transcranial penetration is vascular injury, occurring in 30% cases. It leads to aneurysm in 15%, carotid-cavernous fistula in 7%, other arterio-venous fistula in 4%, trans-section in 3%, & severe vasospasm in 3% cases.…”
