Intracorporeal Anastomosis Reduces Surgical Stress Response in Laparoscopic Right Hemicolectomy: A Prospective Randomized Trial

Abstract: Total laparoscopic right hemicolectomy is a procedure that involves an intracorporeal anastomosis. This approach may reduce tissue injury resulting in a significant lower surgical stress response (SSR) compared with the same procedure performed with an extracorporeal anastomosis. The purpose of this study was to compare the SSR level between 2 groups of patients undergoing laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with intracorporeal or extracorporeal anastomosis. From June 2015 to December 2016, 60 patients were enrol… Show more

“…Surgical stress response plays a key role in surgical outcomes [20]. More surgical trauma results in a higher CRP level [21], and our results (significantly higher CRP and IL-6 levels) were consistent with previous studies [22–24].…”

“…Less bowel manipulation is thought to enhance bowel function recovery. In this study, the times to rst atus, tolerating a soft diet, and bowel movement were signi cantly shorter in the IA group, which is similar to that found in other studies [8,10,19]. Another advantage of IA is that it allows for better alignment of the bowel during anastomosis with isoperistaltic ileocolic anastomosis, less inversion of the ileum, and its mesentery may also contribute to better recovery of bowel function.…”
