Intracoronal stress transfer through enamel following RBC photopolymerisation: A synchrotron X-ray study

Abstract: Although cuspal deflection is routinely measured to indirectly assess the 'global' effect of composite shrinkage on the tooth-restoration complex, here we show that absolute strains generated in enamel are low, indicating strain relief mechanisms may be operative. The use of low irradiance protocols for photo-polymerisation resulted in reduced strain.

“…[ 3 4 5 ] Research has indicated that restorative composites pose stress transfer to the enamel. [ 11 20 21 ] Laboratory investigations, such as cuspal deflection methods,[ 22 23 24 25 ] asserted that some strain is exerted on the tooth’s hard tissue, but it could not be quantified. The strain induced at the lattice level was studied using Synchrotron X-ray diffraction in this study.…”

“…In a comparative study of a human tooth and animal rostrum in a whale, more texture was present in human enamel, suggesting a different biomineralisation process [ 266 ]. Besides phase and texture analyses, WAXS can also be used to study the mechanical properties of materials, such as the measurement of the crystallographic strain of HAp before and after resin-based composite photo-polymerisation [ 380 ] with the determination of the evolution of lattice parameters in enamel.…”
