“…Preliminary studies raised the hypothesis that CHIKV could present tropism for renal tissue, based on detecting the expression of viral proteins and the ability of the virus to replicate in this tissue of animal models. [68][69][70][71] This hypothesis was later strengthened with studies conducted also in human cells, demonstrating that CHIKV has a binding, infectivity, replication and apoptosis induction capacity in renal cells. 72,73 The first case of renal impairment related to CHIK in humans was a boy with nephritic syndrome and no joint symptoms, with a positive PCR for CHIKV.…”

“…The origins and passage histories of these viruses were already described as well as the method to prepare infected suckling mouse brain (SMB) stock viruses (Igarashi, 1978). The Nakayama strain of Japanese encephalitis ( JE) virus was grown in adult mouse brains, and chikungunya (CHIK) virus, African strain, was plaquepurified and seed virus was prepared in BHK21 cells (Igarashi and Fukai, 1969). Cells: BHK21 cells were grown at 37 C with 10 per cent calf serum in Eagle's (1959) minimal essential medium (MEM).…”
