Intracellular Behaviour of Legionella Non-pneumophila Strains within Three Amoeba Strains, Including Willaertia magna C2c Maky

Abstract: Legionellosis, an often-lethal pneumonia, is generally associated with contamination by Legionella pneumophila. This bacterium can persist in the environment and resist chemical treatment when it is internalized by amoebae. In addition, there is increasing medical proof that other Legionella species can be causative agents of Legionellosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether Legionella non-pneumophila (Lnp) strains were able to use the machinery of amoeba to multiply, or whether amoebae were a… Show more

“…This species is associated with cases of legionellosis. We can surmise that 6 out of 15 Legionella species having this protein are human pathogens ( L. parisiensis, bozemanae, jamestowniensis, tucsonensis, jordanis and anisa ) 1 , 48 , 49 .…”

“…The use of protists as microbial inoculum has not been widely adopted in the agricultural market. Nevertheless, the first protist‐based BS and BCA products have been or are in the process of being established in the market (e.g., Ecostyle ProtoPlus®, Amoéba W. magna C2c Maky; Croze et al, 2021). Currently available nematode‐based BCA products, however, focus entirely on entomopathogenic nematodes that control insect pests independent of the soil microbiome (Abd‐Elgawad, 2019; Nxitywa & Malan, 2022; Shapiro‐Ilan et al, 2023).…”

“…This was considered as the initial incubation time (time zero). At certain points in time, after infection (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 h), the amoeba cells were treated with 0.1% Triton X-100 (Sigma, St. Louis, MO, USA [33]) for 10 min to lyse the amoeba cells. The number of bacteria cultured in amoeba was determined by the CFU method, by adding serially diluted suspensions of Legionella on BCYE agar plates, and incubation for 72 h at 37 • C. The bacteria cultured in amoeba for 4 days were used in pasteurization trials.…”
