Intraarticular fibroma of the tendon sheath arising from the infrapatellar fat pad in the knee joint

Abstract: We report a rare case of fibroma of the tendon sheath arising from the fat pad in the knee. To our knowledge, only four previous cases of fibroma of the tendon sheath in the knee have been reported in the English literature. In our case, magnetic resonance imaging showed low signal intensity in the mass on T1- and T2-weighted images. The mass was excised by mini arthrotomy.

“…Fox et al reviewed six cases of FTS to identify the MRI characteristics [2]. According to these authors, the diagnosis of FTS can be suggested when MRI reveals a focal nodular mass adjacent to a tendon sheath with decreased signal on all pulse sequences and little or non-enhancement [2].…”

According to these authors, the diagnosis of FTS can be suggested when MRI reveals a focal nodular mass adjacent to a tendon sheath with decreased signal on all pulse sequences and little or non-enhancement [2]. Other reports suggest that the signal characteristics could vary from intermediate to low or isointense to muscle with heterogeneity [3][4][5].…”

“…FTS is a slow-growing tumor, and most patients complained of a slow-growing painless mass. 5 Less than 10% of patients has history of trauma. 2 X-rays are usually normal, except the tumor is very large compressing the surrounding bony tissue causing erosion.…”
