Intra‐shoreface erosion in response to rapid sea‐level fall: depositional record of a tectonically uplifted strand plain, Pacific coast of Japan

Abstract: This study documents lowering of the surf zone (i.e. the upper shoreface) leading to intra-shoreface erosion, following two rapid relative sea-level falls along a tectonically uplifted coast during the Holocene, and the characteristics of the resultant prograding shoreface deposits. These findings are based on high-resolution analysis and radiocarbon dating of three new drill cores obtained from the Kujukuri strand plain, Pacific coast of eastern Japan, combined with previously published borehole data and info… Show more

“…Stepped forced regression has been widely documented in the geological record in nearshore depositional environments (e.g., deltaic, shoreface) (Posamentier et al 1992;Hamberg and Nielsen 2000;Azeredo et al 2002;Tamura et al 2007) and particularly in some Cretaceous examples (Plint 1988;Pattison 1995;Fitzsimmons and Johnson 2000;Payenberg et al 2002;Payenberg et al 2003). However, it is poorly documented in fluvial deposits (but see Blum and Valastro 1994 andHamilton et al 2001), which may be due to low preservation potential and lack of recognition criteria.…”

“…In addition, although there are many examples of stepped forced regressions associated with marine depositional systems (Plint 1988;Posamentier et al 1992;Hamberg and Nielsen 2000;Azeredo et al 2002;Tamura et al 2007), including the Ferron Notom Delta (Li and Bhattacharya 2011;Zhu et al 2012), there are far fewer examples that show how coeval valleys evolve during such stepped relative sea-level falls (Blum 1993;Zaitlin et al 1994;Hamilton et al 2001;Ardies et al 2002;Korus et al 2008). This study attempts to evaluate the possibility of the origin of the Ferron compound valley as a function of a high-frequency stepped forced regression and to propose models for identifying forced regressions by analysis of valley-fill deposits, as opposed to shoreline systems, which is more routinely attempted.…”

“…Bristow and Pucillo () characterised the subsurface structures and demonstrated the incremental building of the Guichen Bay ridge plain. Its application to coastal settings also holds great potential for reconstruction of palaeo sea level through the identification of wave‐built facies and their elevation (for example, Tamura et al, ). Radar reflectors appear to record bedding stratification, which can allow discrimination of aeolian‐deposited foredune sands from wave‐deposited beachface.…”
