Intra‐organizational user‐centred design practices: The impact of design research departments at design consultancies

Abstract: The user is a critical factor in design and innovation. Firms experiment with different approaches to involving the user in design processes, which results in new forms of intra‐ and extra‐organizational collaboration. The establishment of in‐house design research units within design consultancies is one such intra‐organizational user‐centred design practice that targets designer‐researcher collaboration. This paper addresses this issue and reports on the findings from multiple case study research exploring th… Show more

“…The appropriate use of assistive technology devices and the provision of a barrier-free environment can provide more support to the elderly and increase opportunities for social participation. At the same time, such social design can be achieved through a user-centered approach to service design, and through designers’ active engagement in contextual and collaborative learning to make the overall senior service work [ 65 ].…”

“…In the same sense, internal design research departments allow designers' user knowledge to be developed from their findings, processes, and especially human resources. It also includes that the enhanced contribution of designers to the research process is most important given its involvement in contextual and collaborative learning about users (Oygur & Thompson, 2020).…”

“…In China there are continues debates concerning an efficient commercialization of research results and how to be successful in this field. All the researchers highlight the fact that users of innovative solutions play a critical role in this process (Lundvall 2002;Mazurkiewicz & Poteralska 2011;Oygür & Thompson 2020). Research institutes, including the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology, engage users in all the stages of the processes of designing, testing and implementing innovative solutions, i.e.…”
