Intra‐individuals and inter‐ and intra‐observer reliability of short‐term heart rate variability in adolescents

Abstract: Indicators of reproducibility obtained in this study suggest that HRV can be used in adolescents; however, the analysis of HRV parameters should be performed by the same person.

“…However, Sinnreich et al (1998) and Tarkiainen et al (2005) did not observe such significant differences between the time (CV 6-11%) and frequency domain indices (CV 7-15%). A slightly lower CV for the frequency versus time domain indices was even reported by Farah et al (2014) who also presented the highest CV for the ratio indices.…”

“…Previous reliability studies have been primarily designed as a test-retest with repeating the HRV measurement(s) after several days (Al Haddad et al, 2011; Farah et al, 2014), weeks (Nunan et al, 2009) or months (Salo et al, 2001; Tarkiainen et al, 2005). These reliability study designs are definitely suitable for the repetitive inter-day HRV monitoring.…”

“…In recent years, especially in the field of sports science, the reliability of HRV analysis has performed under various physical activities (Dupuy et al, 2012;Boullosa et al, 2014;Candido et al, 2015;Nakamura et al, 2016). Reliability was found in good or excellent level in different studies (Sandercock et al, 2004;Farah et al, 2016). In the HRV reliability analysis, recordings are generally compared in different days.…”

“…In addition to the positive effects on blood pressure, studies have analysed the effects of isometric handgrip training on the autonomic nervous system, which plays a major role in the regulation of the cardiovascular system (Badrov et al, ; Farah et al, ; Millar, Levy, McGowan, McCartney, & MacDonald, ; Stiller‐Moldovan, Kenno, & McGowan, ; Taylor, Mccartney, Kamath, & Wiley, ) and sympathetic increase and parasympathetic reduction to the heart are associated with fatal and non‐fatal cardiovascular events (Dekker et al, ; Tsuji et al, ). In these studies, cardiac autonomic modulation was assessed using heart rate variability, which is a non‐invasive method to assess cardiac autonomic modulation based on the analysis of the variations in the time between heart beats (Farah et al, ; Task Force of the European Society of Cardiology & the North American Society of Pacing & Electrophysiology, ).…”
