Intra-household decision-making among smallholder agroforestry farmers in the eastern highlands of Uganda

Quantitative data were collected through a cross-sectional survey in which both husbands and wives were interviewed separately and used to determine the decision-making power of … Show more

“…More detailed information on farmers' social conditions is shown in Table 1. Agroforestry farmers around Tahura WAR are dominated by men, which is similar to conditions in other places in Lampung, elsewhere in Indonesia, and several other countries (Desalgne et al 2022;Fauziyah 2018;Gebrehiwot et al 2018;Kalanzi et al 2020;Manginsela et al 2021;Susanti et al 2021). The age of agroforestry farmers around Tahura WAR is also dominated by the older farmers, with a few young farmers (≤ 30 years), that was similar to several areas in Indonesia and other countries (Burano and Siska 2019;Dewi et al 2021;Pujiono et al 2021;Rozaki et al 2021;Sauvadet et al 2020).…”

“…Such disagreements were also reported by Kalanzi et al. (2020) among smallholder agroforestry farmers in Uganda. However, these cases are few in our data (about one in every five couples), and robustness checks that exclude these cases in the analysis essentially give similar results.…”

“…Men and women play complementary roles such as weeding and harvesting of crops, but with some gendered variations (Manginsela, 2016). With regard to decision-making over the crops to be grown, women dominate the decision-making over the type of crops to be cultivated due to the genderascribed roles of women: to prepare food for members of their households (Kalanzi et al,2020). Moreover, men and women engage not only in the grazing of livestock within forested lands but also in the collection of livestock fodder from forests (Manginsela, 2016;Sithole et al, 2021).…”

“…Both men and women have rights over wild fruits and vegetables located within forested areas (Gurung et al, 2013;Kalanzi et al, 2020;Manginsela, 2016;Matiku et al, 2013;Rotich, 2019). In relation to collection spaces of fruits and vegetables, men have access to wild fruits and vegetables growing in the deeper parts of the forest, while women collect fruits and vegetables growing at the edge of the forest (Manginsela, 2016).…”
