Intra-articular nodular fasciitis of the shoulder: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Nodular fasciitis is a benign proliferation of myofibroblasts usually arising adjacent to the fascia. In this report, we describe a rare case in which nodular fasciitis occurred in an intra-articular location in the shoulder of a 26-year-old man. The mass developed in the subscapularis recess of the shoulder and histological evaluation showed a myofibroblastic proliferation. MRI findings of intra-articular nodular fasciitis are discussed along with a review of previous reports.

“…In addition, there was no intra-osseous or intraarticular extension of the lesions, as described in other publications. 11,[16][17][18] The sizes of the lesions in our study were comparable to those in other studies, with a mean diameter of 2.6 cm. The mean time from lesion discovery to presentation for…”

“…Sonograms were acquired with high-frequency linear array (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17) MHz) transducers on clinical ultrasound machines (LOGIQ 9; GE Healthcare, Wauwatosa, WI; and HDI 5000 and iU22; Philips Healthcare, Bothell, WA) as part of routine patient care. Magnetic resonance images were acquired on a clinical 1.5-T system (Signa Excite; GE Healthcare).…”

“…They also noted that intra-articular nodular fasciitis tended to have a longer preoperative history than the usual subcutaneous or intramuscular variants. Similar to our case, three of the 16 cases in the English literature reported a history of trauma before the development of intra-articular nodular fasciitis [1][2][3][4] . In the case report by Yamamoto.…”

“…The nodular fasciitis is a benign myofibroblastic proliferating tumor-like lesion with a predilection for the subcutaneous tissue, fascia and within the muscle. Intraarticular location of the nodular fasciitis has been also reported (19, 20). The CT and MR imaging findings of the nodular fasciitis are nonspecific, according to the amount of cellularity and fibrous component.…”
