Intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy as a preoperative treatment of locally advanced breast cancer

Abstract: Intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy was made through the internal mammary artery and subclavian artery in 12 cases of locally advanced breast cancer. Continuous infusion of 5-fluorouracil and intermittent injections of Mitomycin C were jointly made for 1 to 4 weeks in each artery. Marked response in not only the primary tumor but also lymph node metastasis was clinically observed, permitting extended radical mastectomy successfully in all cases. Remarkable regressive changes were histologically observed in ca… Show more

“…1,2 Arterial infusion chemotherapy is not a standard therapy, but it is sometimes performed with the aim of down-staging or for local control. There are some reports of arterial infusion chemotherapy [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] and a catheter port system, 11 which as neoadjuvant chemotherapy attained high local control (70%-90%).…”

“…The dose intensity of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and its administration schedule also remain controversial. [5][6][7][8] The purpose of the present study is thus to examine the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy using IAIC for advanced breast cancer, and to contribute to the identification of the histological response in order to better predict the survival time of Stage III and IV patients. Several reports were published in the 1960s on this procedure, and many comprehensive studies have claimed prominent responses in locoregional lesions and/or long-term survival times after surgery of breast cancer.…”
