Intra and Interdomain Circuit Provisioning Using the OSCARS Reservation System

Abstract: Abstract-With the advent of service sensitive applications such as remote controlled experiments, time constrained massive data transfers, and video-conferencing, it has become apparent that there is a need for the setup of dynamically provisioned, quality of service enabled virtual circuits. The ESnet On-Demand Secure Circuits and Advance Reservation System (OSCARS) is a prototype service enabling advance reservation of guaranteed bandwidth secure virtual circuits.OSCARS operates within the Energy Sciences Ne… Show more

“…Common APIs such as OSCARS [10] are also emerging for transport network circuit services. Providers may deploy these and other systems independently; once a system is deployed we can install a front-end orchestration service (AM) to link it into the federation without interfering with its other functions and users.…”

“…The FDT tool integrates InterDomain Controller Protocol (IDCP) On-Demand Secure Circuits and Advance Reservation System (OSCARS [11]) calls so integrating it in PhEDEx naturally gives us Bandwidth on Demand capabilities. In addition to this, FDT performs extremely well as a transfer tool in itself, as we will show in this paper.…”

“…Nowadays, the most widely used bandwidth reservation service within the global research and networking community is provided by ESnet, where the OSCARS software is deployed with multi-domain, high-bandwidth virtual circuits. By using OSCARS, ESnet provides interoperable, effective, reliable, and high performance network communications infrastructure, and certain collaboration services [19][20][21][22][23]. Currently, more than 40 DOE research sites, including the entire National Laboratory system, together with its supercomputing facilities, the major scientific instruments and another 140 research and commercial networks around the world are using ESnet to transfer scientific data and collaborate [20,21].…”
