Intra- and Inter-Rater Agreement of Anterior Lamina Cribrosa Depth Measurements Using Enhanced-Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract: Purpose: To determine intra- and inter-rater agreement of anterior lamina cribrosa depth (ALCD) manual measurements using enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). Methods: Observational study. EDI-OCT of the optic nerve head was performed in healthy subjects. ALCD was defined as the perpendicular distance between the line connecting both edges of Bruch's membrane opening and the anterior border of the lamina cribrosa (LC), at the maximum depth point. Two experienced operators performed ma… Show more

“…In line with other publications, we found a disparity between inter- and intra-reader reliability for retinal layer annotations [ 22 , 23 , 24 ]. As expected, these were most pronounced in layers difficult to delineate, such as the outer plexiform layer where graders had to account for the Henle Nerve Fiber dispersion [ 25 ].…”

“…It is therefore essential to assess agreement measures before interpreting the data presented here. Previous unpublished data from our group had calculated an intraobserver intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.91 and an interobserver intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.90 of ALCD manual measurements using EDI-OCT (21). Calculated intraobserver and interobserver repeatability coefficients are between 10 and 14 μm and 12 and 14 μm, respectively.…”

“…A previous study verified these measurements to be highly reproducible and with a low intraobserver and interobserver variability. Intraobserver and interobserver concordance correlation coefficients varied between 0.85-0.95 and 0.84-0.93, respectively (21).…”
