Summary: An eight-year-old grey Mecklenburger warmblood gelding was presented for clinical examination with a history of preputial swelling and oedema. Castration was completed at least five years ago. The skin was intact and a firm, diffuse swelling was found in the left inguinal region at the caudal part of the prepuce. Transcutaneous ultrasonography revealed an oedematous subcutis and a spherical, moderately demarcated mass with an echoic capsule and a hypoechoic centre, extending into the left external inguinal ring. After surgical removal, histopathologic and bacteriologic evaluation led to the diagnosis of chronic Staphylococcus aureus infection (botryomycosis). This case report describes the diagnosis, surgical and antimicrobial treatment and successful outcome of this nowadays seldom reported longterm complication after castration. Correspondence: Dr. F.
