Background: The lack of couples' intimacy is one of the main concerns of experts in the field of psychology and counseling. It is one of the most important causes of divorce. The 9th principle of International conference on population and development (ICPD) highlights the support of the family as the main unit of the society. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the socio-demographic factors predicting marital intimacy in a sample of Iranian couples. Objectives: The study aimed to determine the socio-demographic predictors of marital intimacy in couples. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 118 couples referring to healthcare settings. A random sampling method was used to recruit the couples. Data were collected using the socio-demographic questionnaire, the Bagarozzi's marital intimacy needs questionnaire, Barton's communication skills questionnaire, the Hazan and Shaver's adult attachment styles (1678) questionnaire, and the interpersonal conflict management style (ICMSI). The collected data were analyzed using inferential and descriptive statistics. Results: A statistically significant positive correlation was found in the mean of marital intimacy between men and women. The predictors of marital intimacy in men were the attachment style and communication skills. The predictors of marital intimacy in women were marital satisfaction, communication skills, and conflict resolution styles. Conclusions: Future interventions to improve marital intimacy in couples should consider the following factors: marital satisfaction, marital conflicts, duration of the marriage, communication skills, conflict resolution styles, and the attachment style. It is noted that counselors should attempt to provide appropriate care for couples with the consideration of the above-mentioned factors influencing their interactions and behaviors.

Relaciones de pareja homosexual y heterosexual: un estudio comparativoResumen. Esta investigación tiene el propósito de evaluar y comparar a personas heterosexuales y homosexuales, con relaciones de pareja estables, respecto a los componentes de la teoría triangular del amor, tácticas de resolución de conflictos, ajuste con la pareja y bienestar psicológico. Participaron 157 adultos jóvenes chilenos, 77 homosexuales (30 lesbianas y 47 gays) y 80 heterosexuales (45 mujeres y 35 hombres). Se utilizaron la Escala de Ajuste Diádico, la Escala Triangular del Amor de Sternberg, la Flourishing Scale de Diener y el Conflict Resolution Style Inventory de Kurdek. Los resultados muestran algunas diferencias significativas en tácticas de resolución de conflicto, componentes del amor y ajuste en la pareja, según la orientación sexual; además existen diferencias entre las mujeres que conviven y no conviven.Palabras clave. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare heterosexual and homosexual people who are in stable relationships, with respect to the components of the triangular theory of love: conflict resolution tactics, couple adjustment and psychological wellbeing. The participants were comosed of 157 young adults Chileans: 77 homosexuals (30 lesbians and 47 gay men) and 80 heterosexuals (45 women and 35 men). The instruments used were the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, the Sternberg's Triangular Love Scale, the Flourishing Scale of Diener and Conflict Resolution Style Inventory of Kurdek. The results show that there are significant differences in some conflict resolution tactics, components of love between partners, and couple adjustment according to sexual orientation. In addition, there are also differences between women living and not living with a partner.

RESUMOAs análises fatoriais da Escala Triangular do Amor de Sternberg (ETAS), que teoricamente possui três componentes, têm extraído um primeiro fator que explica a maior parte da variância, revelado cross loadings em diversos itens e elevadas correlações entre fatores. Alguns pesquisadores postularam a unidimensionalidade da medida. Outros tentando superar os problemas psicométricos definiram versões reduzidas (ETAS-R). O estudo atual reexaminou a ETAS e a ETAS-R com duas amostras de 937 e 817 do sul e do sudeste do Brasil, respectivamente, buscando contribuir para a clarificação da complexidade fatorial das escalas. Os escores foram submetidos às análises fatoriais exploratórias e hierárquicas. Para a ETAS apareceram fortes evidências da existência de uma dimensão geral em detrimento das dimensões específicas e para a ETAS-R, uma solução de segunda ordem e três fatores de primeira ordem com itens representando equilibradamente as dimensões geral e específica. The current research reviewed the ETAS and ETAS-R (short version) with two samples of convenience -with 937 and 817 participants, from the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, respectively -seeking to contribute to the clarification of this factorial complexity. The scores were submitted to Exploratory and Hierarchical Factor Analyses. For ETAS, strong evidence appeared of the existence of a general factor to the detriment of specific dimensions. For ETAS-R, a second-order and three first-order factors, with items presenting general and specific dimensions in balance.
