Intestinal strangulation after elective ovariohysterectomy

Abstract: A 6-month-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat was presented with an acute onset of vomiting and marked lethargy. The cat had undergone elective ovariohysterectomy via a small midline incision 2 weeks prior to presentation. Intestinal strangulation through a mesenteric rent was diagnosed via abdominal ultrasound and exploratory laparotomy. Intestinal resection and anastamosis resulted in a good clinical outcome despite excision of 60% of the small intestine.

“…To the authors’ knowledge, iatrogenic colonic entrapment with uterine horn remnants has not been reported as a complication of OVH in either feline patients or other species. OVH complications involving chronic fibrous bands causing colonic strictures, as well as entrapment of the small intestine due to the formation of an iatrogenic mesenteric rent, have been reported; however, the present case appears novel by way of the cause of stricture formation and its peracute presentation 7–11 …”

“…Entrapment of the small intestine in a cat has also been recognised by Kuan et al. due to iatrogenic formation of a small intestinal mesenteric rent during OVH, leading to the patient presenting in shock and treatment with resection and anastomosis of small intestine 8 …”
