Intestinal Scavenger Receptors Are Involved in Vitamin K1 Absorption

Abstract: Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) intestinal absorption is thought to be mediated by a carrier protein that still remains to be identified. Apical transport of vitamin K1 was examined using Caco-2 TC-7 cell monolayers as a model of human intestinal epithelium and in transfected HEK cells. “…ISX binds and suppresses the expression of Scarb1 and BCO1, and thereby confers the enterocyte the ability to regulate the uptake and cleavage of β-carotene (Lobo et al, 2010). Interestingly, since intestinal SCARB1 is also involved in the uptake of many other lipids and lipid-soluble vitamins including xanthophylls, vitamin E, and vitamin K (Goncalves et al, 2014;Reboul et al, 2006), this model would also suggest that an excess of preformed vitamin A (as present in some fortified foods and supplements) could result in a high expression of ISX and, thus, impaired absorption of these important micronutrients.
