“…An increase of lactulose recovery is suggestive of loosening of the tight junctions (gut inflammation) while a decrease of mannitol recovery indicates a reduction of absorptive surface area (malabsorption) (5,12). SAT has been widely used in all paediatric ages (6,12,13) and its use in newborns has enabled the study of the ontogeny of IP and the evaluation of the modifications of the intestinal barrier occurring in physiological (6,13,14) and pathological conditions (5,7,12).
