Intestinal Obstruction by Giant Meckel's Diverticulum

Abstract: Background: Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the small bowel and is caused by the incomplete obliteration of the omphalomesenteric duct during the eighth week of gestation. Methods: We report the case of a 51-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with epigastric pain, vomiting, and abdominal distension. Clinically, he had a high intestinal obstruction without any mechanical cause on computed tomography scan. A median laparotomy was proposed. Results: An internal … Show more

“…This diverticulum is located within 60cm of the ileocecal valve, in the antimesenteric border of the small bowel. Of those who have the diverticulum, the lifetime risk of complication is approximately 4% [9]. The commonest complication in adult patients is obstruction, followed by bleeding [8].…”

“…Many authors discouraged the resection of a broad-base or of a short length MD without palpable mass in the lumen in case of casually found [4,5]. In contrast, a long and narrow base diverticulum is prone to diverticulitis and torsion, while intussusception is a frequent complication detected with a short and stumpy base diverticulum [2]. Regarding the size of MD, those which the diameter is  5 cm may result in SBO [2].…”

“…Meckel's diverticulum is a true diverticulum that includes all 3 coats of the small intestine. Meckel's diverticulum is a vestigial remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct [1]. Generally, Meckel's diverticulum ranges from 1-12 cm in length and is found 45-90 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve [2].…”
