Intestinal Infection Due to EnteroaggregativeEscherichia coliamong Human Immunodeficiency Virus–Infected Persons

Abstract: To investigate the pathogenic role of enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAggEC) among human immunodeficiency virus-infected persons, 111 outpatients with and 68 without diarrhea were evaluated. Examination of stool samples included the HeLa cell adherence assay and an EAggEC polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using primers complementary for the plasmid locus CVD432. The pCVD432 genotype, adherence phenotype, and patient characteristics were correlated with occurrence of diarrhea by multivariate analyses. … Show more

“…The discrimination factor used in the initial detection of the EAEC isolates was the PCR assay with primers derived from a probe for AA. Some reports have shown that the correlation of results obtained by the PCR-and probe-based assay and assays for AA may vary by location (11,37,52,55). However, compared to the assay for AA, the PCR-and probe-based detection of EAEC has been found to be simple and specific in many epidemiological studies (12,46).…”

“…In a study conducted in Calcutta, India, the same PCR assay performed with similar sensitivity and specificity (7). In a Swiss study investigating the pathogenic role of EAEC among human immunodeficiency virus-infected persons, the pCVD432 PCR assay was demonstrated to better correlate with clinical findings than the cell adherence assay (6). Other studies, however, have provided evidence that pCVD432-probe-negative EAEC strains may also be associated with diarrheal illness (15,20).…”

“…[12][13][14][15] However, there are few studies on the prevalence of diarrheagenic E. coli in pediatric HIV patients. [16][17][18][19][20] The aims of this study were 1) to determine the prevalence of diarrheagenic E. coli in Peruvian children infected with HIV with and without diarrhea, 2) to determine its association with viral load and immunosuppression, and 3) to determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns of diarrheagenic E. coli isolated from these patients.…”
