Intestinal helminths induce haematological changes in dogs from Jabalpur, India

Abstract: The effect of canine intestinal helminths on the haematological profile of 200 dogs, of both sexes and variable age, visiting university veterinary clinics for routine examination was investigated. The dogs were assigned to parasitized (n = 39) and non-parasitized (n = 161) groups of animals. Coprological examination revealed a 19.5% prevalence of different species of the helminths. Of these animals, 10.25% had mixed infections with Ancylostoma caninum, Toxascaris spp. and Dipylidium caninum. The intensity of … Show more

“…Similar findings were also obtained in various surveys in different countries across the world including India which varies from 2.21%-40.56% [4][5][6][7][8][9][14][15][16]. Minor variation in the results in these surveys is attributable due to geographical variation, environmental factors, sample size, clinically apparent symptomatic dog population and other stress factors involved in parasite transmission.…”

“…Epidemiological pattern of the parasitic diseases in the different agro-climatic zones of the country usually provides a basis for developing strategic and tactical control systems against them [2][3]. Several studies on epidemiology of canine intestinal parasites have been reported in many parts of the world including India [4][5][6][7][8][9]. In India, perusal of literature revealed prevalence of helminths infection were 2.21% in Pudduchery [4], 19.71% in Punjab [5], 19.5% in Jabalpur [6], 24.3% in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh [7] and 40.4% in Bangalore [8].…”

“…Significant reduction in erythrogram in parasitized dogs compared to control dogs suggesting anemia, correlation between Toxocara infection and anemia in puppies has been recorded (Deger et al, 1997;Ogunkoya et al, 2006;Chattha et al, 2009;Qadir et al, 2011;Kumar et al, 2014) but the exact cause of the anemia was not fully explained. However, in one research paper dealt with Toxocara vitulorum in buffalo calves, Sarma et al (2012) postulated the anemia might be a result of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation mechanism of tissue damage.…”
