Intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) as a marker for acute intestinal ischemia

Abstract: Background: Acute mesenteric ischemia accounts for around 0.1% of all hospital admission and less than 1% of emergency admissions. However, the presentation is varied, and diagnosis is obscure. The diagnosis of intestinal ischemia demands a high index of suspicion. The overall mortality associated with mesenteric ischemia is between 60% and 93% but rises acutely once bowel wall infarction has occurred.
