Intestinal anastomosis with a skin stapler: A safe and efficient method in humans

Abstract: A method of intestinal anastomosis with a skin stapler has been used successfully in 39 patients to form 40 anastomoses. The method has been employed in elective and emergency surgery, in small and large intestine, for a variety of pathological conditions and in the presence of obstruction, sepsis and soiling. Bowel anastomosis with a skin stapler is safe, simple and efficient in time and materials.

“…Colonic skin stapled one layer end‐to‐end anastomosis for the treatment of firearm injuries was first introduced into human medicine by military surgeons (Fraser ). Subsequent studies have documented that skin staplers provide rapid and effective construction of intestinal anastomosis (Fraser ; Edwards and Galbraith ).…”

“…Colonic skin stapled one layer end‐to‐end anastomosis for the treatment of firearm injuries was first introduced into human medicine by military surgeons (Fraser ). Subsequent studies have documented that skin staplers provide rapid and effective construction of intestinal anastomosis (Fraser ; Edwards and Galbraith ). End‐to‐end jejunojejunal anastomosis is a common procedure in equine abdominal surgery and various techniques for constructing small intestine anastomosis have been developed including 1‐ and 2‐layer handsewn (Latimer et al .…”

“…Bowel obstruction represents an emergency situation in which, especially in the case of elderly patients, we need safe and uncomplicated surgical technique [2]. Although there is a trend towards primary anastomoses even in these patients [1,6], Hartmann's discontinuity resection has to be considered a valid alternative [16,17]. The advantage of avoiding a risky primary anastomosis is counterbalanced by the need for a second laparotomy to restore continuity.…”
