Background: Arts-based research methods and priority setting research both reflect growing commitments towards public and participant involvement in research activities. This has contributed to a growth of these respective methods across research disciplines and sectors, but their intersection has not been explored. Methods: We conducted a scoping review to map the state-of-the-science of arts-based approaches within priority setting research. We conducted an open search of three databases, conducted reference list mining, and hand-searched two journals to identify relevant articles. Of 5457 records retrieved, 11 met our pre-established inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Data were extracted using Microsoft Excel to produce narrative and descriptive summaries. Findings: All articles had some degree of health focus. Areas of priority setting centered on chronic illness, hard to reach populations, cancer survivorship, dental reform, and youth. In terms of artistic approaches, the majority of the articles included visual methods, with some articles utilizing multiple art approaches such as music, drawing, and filmmaking. Qualitative methods were used in all articles alongside the arts-based approaches, encompassing techniques such as interviews, discussions, and storytelling. Priority setting activites were mainly facilitated in group settings. The suggested benefits of arts-based approaches included enhancing participant communication, improving accessible research dissemination, and encouraging dialogues on identified health concerns. Challenges with using arts-based approaches included limitations on time and resources. Conclusion: Arts-based approaches to priority setting is an expanding field, with clear applications across various research contexts and priority focal areas. Further attention to the integration of arts-based approaches within priority setting, their theoretical underpinnings, and concurrent development and evaluation of arts-based priority setting methods are warranted.

Background Historically, the experiences and voices of children and youth living with neurodiversity or rehabilitation needs and their families have not been fully represented in health research. Formative research in this context indicates that families value learning from the experiences of other families as well as from empirical research. However, innovative systems are needed to support this imperative. In response, we co-designed a virtual living lab with families and clinicians to support family-centered knowledge exchange in neurodiversity and rehabilitation research. Living labs are collaborative, user-centered, long-term, and multimethod systems with potential to support the exchange of knowledge of lived experience. This proposal outlines a longitudinal arts-based and qualitative research study that incorporates storytelling as a powerful tool to elicit and exchange stories of lived experience through the virtual living lab, and subsequent usability testing of the platform. Methods and Analysis Stage 1- We will conduct an integrated knowledge translation study inclusive of user centered lab design and construction. Stage 2- We will conduct a 6-month longitudinal qualitative storytelling study with 30–40 participants including neurodiverse children and youth ages 5–19 years, their siblings, and parent/guardians, guided by the F-words framework which is based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. Following user-registration within the virtual lab, participants will complete a minimum of 1 story monthly, accompanied by an arts-based component, for 6 months. Conclusion Findings will inform the co-development of an arts-based knowledge translation resource to communicate key findings. Stage 3- A subset of families will be sampled to complete usability testing of the living lab platform and storytelling feature using a sequential explanatory mixed methods design. Usability evaluation will inform future platform refinements and provide indications of acceptability and use across subgroups.

‘More than a pill’: A qualitative co-exploration of the things that matter in young women's stories of adherence to antiretroviral treatment in South Africa

Background: Young women living with perinatal infections of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (YWLPHIV) in low- and middle-income countries are more likely to be challenged by social and health inequities, which can make adherence to life-long treatment difficult. We aimed to learn more about how YWLPHIV in Cape Town negotiated their adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART) within their material environments. Methods: We adopted a multisensory arts-based community participatory approach and used visual and digital mediums for data-collection and analytical purposes. We developed an Adherence Assemblage model to guide our study. The co-research team consisted of three academics, seven YWLPHIV (although they approved the study they could not be named as authors to protect their identities), one counsellor and two visual ethnographers. Results: We co-creatively synthesised our findings into one research documentary and five co-creative artworks. We synthesised four storylines: ‘living with a (un)exposed HIV secret’, ‘multisensory experience of adherence’, ‘things that matter in adherence’, and ‘engaging spaces and places’. Things such as the pill itself were perceived as triggers for associated memories and evoked emotional responses, impacting the adherence behaviours of YWLPHIV. At times, non-adherence was used as an act of control, with young women claiming power by rejecting the pills. Besides the more obvious lines of argument on power dynamics, the findings suggest that materiality influences adherence too. However, it is seldom used as an analytical concept to investigate challenges related to ART. Conclusions: In conclusion, understanding the material environment's role in adherence is crucial for developing more effective support systems for YWLPHIV. Further research that prioritises the specific needs of YWLPHIV emotional, cognitive, and psychosocial development, while paying attention to the material environment is needed.
