Interventions to prevent hypothermia at birth in preterm and/or low birthweight infants

Abstract: Plastic wraps or bags, skin-to-skin care and transwarmer mattresses all keep preterm infants warmer, leading to higher temperatures on admission to neonatal units and less hypothermia. Given the low NNT, consideration should be given to using these interventions in the delivery suite. However, the small numbers of infants and studies and the absence of long-term follow-up mean that firm recommendations for clinical practice cannot be given. There is a need to conduct large, high quality randomised controlled t… Show more

“…Bathing the newborn babies shortly after birth may increase the risk of hypothermia [9]. This finding of the present study correlates with results of another study done in an urban area of New Delhi where it was observed that bathing the baby immediately after birth was common practice in 82.6% of home deliveries [10].…”

“…A Cochrane review of polyethylene and polyurethane bags and wraps showed that they resulted in significantly lower rates of hypothermia among infants <32 weeks gestation. 79,100 Many of these bags and plastic sheets are locally available at low cost in low resource settings.…”

“…Coverage of key maternal and newborn health interventions in developing countries is low, and wide disparities exist within countries, across socioeconomic status, geographic location and educational status. In 2008, only 63% of deliveries in developing countries were attended by skilled health personnel, as opposed to 99% in developed regions [2]. Furthermore, within developing regions, the proportion of women receiving the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended four or more antenatal visits is 67% in urban areas versus only 34% in rural areas.…”
