Interventions for acute auricular haematoma

Abstract: There is no clearly defined best treatment for acute auricular haematoma. There are no good quality data to determine either the optimal management strategy or even whether post-drainage intervention (such as splinting or bandaging) is necessary. Further research is required before any specific treatment may be recommended.

The durability of the PVS bolster allowed the patient to resume his martial arts sparring activity during the immediate post-operative period.…”

“…Nevertheless, and due to lack of good-quality data, today, there is no clearly defined optimal management strategy for auricular hematoma. Furthermore, the question of a postdrainage dressing is questionable (35). However, the most effective prevention of auricular hematoma is to protect the recovering ears from blunt trauma, particularly in sports such as wrestling, boxing, and rugby.…”

“…After evacuation of the hematoma, providers also must decide on the placement of a bolster pressure dressing in an effort to prevent reaccumulation. Several methods of preparing and applying a bolster dressing have been described in the literature, including the use of dental rolls, Silastic splints, Xeroform, and buttons, though none have definitely been found to be superior . Similar to a formal bolster dressing, the absorbable mattress suture technique can also be used to apply consistent compression to minimize reaccumulation .…”
