BackgroundRecovery in mental health care is complex, highly individual and can be facilitated by a range of professional and non-professional support. In this study we will examine how recovery from mental health problems is promoted in non-medical settings. We hypothesise a relationship between involvement in decisions about care, social support and recovery and quality of life outcomes.MethodsWe will use standardised validated instruments of involvement in decision-making, social contacts, recovery and quality of life with a random sample of people accessing non-statutory mental health social care services in Wales. We will add to this important information with detailed one to one case study interviews with people, their family members and their support workers. We will use a series of these interviews to examine how people build recovery over time to help us understand more about their involvement in decisions and the social links they build.DiscussionWe want to see how being involved in decisions about care and the social links people have are related to recovery and quality of life for people with experience of using mental health support services. We want to understand the different perspectives of the people involved in making recovery possible. We will use this information to guide further studies of particular types of social interventions and their use in helping recovery from mental health problems.

The purpose of this cross-sectional survey was to examine the relationship between assessments and eligibility decisions made by health and social care staff in multidisciplinary community teams in England. The data were collected between December 2004 and August 2005. The study was a replication of a study that took place in the same eight locations in England before the modernization of health and social care by the present government. Four hundred and thirteen care coordinators responded from 71 teams to produce a total of 1481 clients. Sixty per cent (n = 884) of the sample of clients were categorised as having a psychotic illness compared to 63% in 1997 to 1998. Fair Access to Care Services (FACS) criteria determine access to social care services, and the Care Programme Approach (CPA) determines the level of mental health services provided. There was a close but an incomplete association between FACS and CPA judgements (kappa = 0.37; 95% confidence interval 0.31-0.43). Compared to the standardised Matching Resources to Care version 2 indication of complex needs, social workers' judgements were the most closely aligned to FACS judgements (F = 5.80; d.f. = 2 and 1203; P < 0.01). This raises the question of the need for training for health professionals in order to make decisions about social assessment and eligibility determination.

Rector and Beck (2001) reviewed the literature on utilizing CBT for use with schizophrenia, and found seven randomized, controlled trial studies that test the efficacy of CBT with this population.…”

Psychologists working in state psychiatric hospitals: An exploration of factors related to work engagement Valerie Ignatenko The role of psychologists working in state psychiatric hospitals has been ambiguous throughout most of the last century. State psychiatric hospitals continue to provide care to patients with severe mental illness, and psychologists remain employed in such settings. Eight factors related to work engagement for psychologists in state psychiatric hospitals were explored, including geographic region, length of time in the field, length of time at the hospital, number of clients seen per week, number of supervision hours per month, job ambiguity, autonomy, and perceived social support. Results found that psychologists are engaged in their work in state hospitals, and three of the assessed factors, job ambiguity, autonomy, and perceived social support, were found to be significant predictors of work engagement. The identification of these three factors as predictors of work engagement in state hospitals highlights the need for hospital administrators to clearly define job roles, and for psychologists to ensure that they feel certain about their job role. Job ambiguity was found to offer the strongest negative prediction of work engagement. Further, the need for opportunity to socially interact with colleagues within the hospital is critical, and should be reinforced by hospital administration and encouraged by graduate training programs. A moderate level of autonomy was found to be the most predictive of work engagement, and offers new insights on how managers can approach the supervision of psychologists.
