Interventional musculoskeletal US: an update on materials and methods

Abstract: Pain is one of the most common causes of reduced productivity. The annual cost of health-related reductions in productivity has been estimated at approximately 225 billion dollars in the United States alone. Ultrasound-guided locoregional infiltration procedures have frequently been shown to offer economical, effective, lasting relief of pain. In-depth familiarity with the equipment (probes and needles) and techniques used to perform these procedures are fundamental for safe, effective treatment. In fact, depe… Show more

“…The use of conservative treatments or ESWT in patients with acute pain given by calcific tendinopathy in the resorption phase seems to be suboptimal, and often fails because the symptoms significantly affect the quality of life [11], and many patients may not be able to tolerate the duration of time to resolution [12]. Therefore, invasive interventional techniques, such as steroid injections of the SAD bursa and/ or glenohumeral joint (US guided or not guided) and US-PICT, may be pursued minimally [13].…”

“…Local infiltration of corticosteroid about the Achilles tendon is therefore rarely performed nowadays. However, local infiltration in case of bursitis is still considered a valid treatment and it is widely performed [1,2].…”

“…Ultrasound (US)-guided local infiltration has often proved to be a valid therapy in the treatment of muscoloskeletal pain due to characteristics such as economicity, effectiveness and long-term pain relief [1,2]. Various drugs including corticosteroids are used in interventional musculoskeletal procedures.…”

“…Type B synoviocytes or fibroblasts secrete HA into the articular space exerting a chondroprotective and lubricant effect. 20 Additionally it has analgesic effects secondary to its ability to block nociceptors and bind substance P, a pain mediator. 21 It is a viscose substance injected to replicate the HA occurring naturally in synovial fluid mainly for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA).…”
