Intervening to reduce workplace sitting: mediating role of social-cognitive constructs during a cluster randomised controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundThe Stand Up Victoria multi-component intervention successfully reduced workplace sitting time in both the short (three months) and long (12 months) term. To further understand how this intervention worked, we aimed to assess the impact of the intervention on four social-cognitive constructs, and examined whether these constructs mediated intervention effects on workplace sitting time at 3 and 12 months post-baseline.MethodsTwo hundred and thirty one office-based workers (14 worksites, single governm… Show more

“…In another study, building on a multi-component trial that successfully reduced sitting in the workplace, the purpose was to provide insights into the mechanisms (mediators) to explain the results (i.e., reduced sitting) by examining short- and long-term mediation effects ( 18 ). Two hundred and thirty-one office-based workers were randomly assigned to intervention and control conditions by worksite.…”

“…Guidance from the framework in the planning phase of the study might have led us to include further assessments in the questionnaires. It had been desirable to have measures of possible mediators for the intervention outcomes, such as line managers' attitudes and actions, the perceived need for the intervention, motivation to reduce SB and increase PA at work, and perceived self-efficacy for change [50,52,53]. The utilization of the health and wellness hour would also preferably have been reported from baseline.…”

“…Theory and evidence suggests that the social-cognitive determinants of self-efficacy and social support are important for physical activity adoption and maintenance (60)(61)(62)(63)(64). However, these determinants are not likely to influence how frequently an (older) adult takes active breaks from prolonged sitting because sedentary behaviors are habitual (65).…”
