Intertidal rockpool icthyofauna of El Pital, La Libertad, El Salvador

Abstract: The composition of the rockpool fish community of El Pital was described. A total of 29 rockpools with volumes ranging from 0.12 to 0.83 m3 were sampled from March to September 2009 using dip nets and clove oil anesthetic solution. A total of 106 fishes belonging to 19 species were captured. The most abundant species were Bathygobius ramosus, Abudefduf concolor, Mugil curema and Mugil hospes, representing 66% of all fishes collected. Resident fish comprised 32%, transients comprised 60%, and accidental visitor… Show more

“…Tidepool environments can act as temporal habitats for the different life-stages of fish in various regions (Gibson and Yoshiyama 1999;Murase et al 2010;González-Murcia et al 2012;Murase 2013), and a number of transient species were recorded in this study. These transients comprised two groups in terms of their vertical distribution pattern.…”

“…Mugilidae is a successful fish family present in all tropical, sub-tropical and temperate littoral aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Their biomass often dominates fish communities in intertidal areas (Gonzalez-Murcia et al, 2012), salt marshes (Lefeuvre et al, 1999;Laffaille et al, 2002;Green et al, 2009), mangroves (Thollot et al, 1999;Sukardjo, 2004), estuaries and lagoons (Cardona, 2006;Okyere et al, 2011). The stomach content analyses conducted indicate that adult mugilids are omnivorous benthic microphages, and they feed mainly on detritus [including particular organic matter; Odum (1970); Brusle (1981)], microalgae and especially diatoms (Laffaille et al, 2002;Almeida, 2003) and occasionally on benthic invertebrates of the meiofauna (Lasserre, 1976;Laffaille et al, 1998) and macrofauna (Riera et al, 1999;Bouchard & Lefeuvre, 2000;Quan et al, 2007).…”

“…Although tidal pools are extreme and changeable environmental habitats on the seashore, many marine fishes use tidal pools during part or for the whole of their life histories (González‐Murcia, Marín‐Martínez, & Ayala‐Bocos, ; Metaxas & Scheibling, ). Jeju Island was created by volcanic activity, which formed a rocky shore around its coastline (Kim et al., ), with many tidal pools supporting numerous marine fish.…”
