Recent changes in kelp distribution along the north coast of Spain are described and analysed through a long-term population study focused on Saccorhiza polyschides. The main purpose of this work was to understand which population processes are more sensitive to increased sea surface temperatures and reductions in the intensity of upwelling episodes in the current scenario of global warming. Data on the distribution of kelp species (old and recent data) were obtained from the literature and compared with current species distributions assessed by field sampling between 2007 and 2010 and covering a transition coastline of 200 km. The long-term population study of Saccorhiza polyschides was conducted at a site close to the edge of its current distribution. Data for recruitment, growth and survival, as well as density and supported biomass of populations collected since the 1990s were analysed using data from the late 1970s for comparison. Kelps on the north coast of Spain have shown a westward retreat since the 1980s. Dense populations of Saccorhiza polyschides, the most important species, and Laminaria ochroleuca have been reduced to small patches and isolated individuals east of Pen˜as Cape (43 39.4 0 N; 5 50.8 0 W).The long-term study of Saccorhiza polyschides populations showed a collapse in the growth of the sporophyte and very low recruitment from the beginning of this century. The possible causal factors of this population decline and its consequences are considered, suggesting that long warm summer periods (more than 30 consecutive days of seawater temperature > 20 C) could alter kelp performance.

Present study describes the anthropogenic disturbances on the rocky shore community structure by comparing the benthic communities of disturbed and non-disturbed areas in Sri Lanka where rocky shores remain virtually untouched so far by experimental studies. Impacts of human disturbances; trampling, handling and exploitation on the community structure of rocky macro benthic assemblages were tested in high-, mid-and lowintertidal area by stratified sampling method at Rumassala marine sanctuary and adjacent two localities at either side of the marine sanctuary, Galle and Unawatuna. Univariate measures, log series model and multivariate techniques were used to discriminate the communities with respect to the disturbances. Proximity of study localities and indistinguishable physicochemical parameters of sea surface water (temperature, Salinity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and pH) indicated that overall environment of the study area was relatively uniform and changes in community structure was due to human disturbances. Human disturbances documented as visitor censuses by transect walk method lead to categorize the Rumassala as non-disturbed, Unawatuna as disturbed with Galle being of moderately disturbance. Community abundance showed a decreasing trend along with increasing disturbances, albeit community biomass, due to opportunistic algae species, increased in parallel to disturbances. Computed Index of disturbance revealed that macrofauna was very sensitive to the disturbances and increased disturbances reduced their competitive pressure on macroalgae, leading to outstanding macroalgal growth. Macroalgal domination in disturbed communities contributed to lessen the heterotrophic dominance in Galle and Unawatuna. 96 macrobenthic taxa were encountered from the study and Species richness, Shannon and Fisher's diversity index showed decreasing trend with increasing disturbances. Moreover, initial rising slope of species accumulation curves for three communities indicated that community evenness was low in disturbed communities. The community compositions from dominant conservative species to fast growing opportunistic species were well described by the log series model, showing left skewed distribution. The wetlands of Saudi Arabia are located in a water-stressed region that is highly vulnerable to climate and other global changes. Sebkhas, mudflats, mangroves, and wadis are the dominant wetlands in the arid regions of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. These unique wetlands are recognized as a sanctuary for biodiversity and for their economic services generated from mineral extraction, agriculture, and grazing. Despite their ecological values and societal services, the long-term permanence of Saudi Arabia's wetlands faces strong challenges resulting from human activities associated with sustained population growth, habitat degradation, and coastal development. This paper consolidates a literature review of Saudi Arabia's wetlands from local to global importance, highlights their biodiversity, and identifies threats and evolution of these vulnerable ecosystems in the arid Arabian Peninsula by focusing on the status of key freshwater taxa (Odonata, freshwater fishes, amphibians, and waterbirds) and documenting changes affecting important wetlands.
