One of the interesting things about poems is that they are rich in metaphors. In addition to beautifying expressions in literary works, metaphors have a function to enhance imagination. Rendra was known as a poet who was good at building metaphors in his poems. The purpose of this paper was to describe the influence of biblical metaphors on Rendra's poetry works, especially animal metaphors. The approach used in this study was an intertextuality approach in the perspective of Gerald Genette and Michael Riffaterre. The results of the analysis showed that Rendra's poems in the romantic period, namely the poems collected in the books Ballada Orang-Orang Tercinta and Blues untuk Bonnie, have a tendency to be influenced by animal metaphors from the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments. In Indonesian culture, there was almost no comparison of the female with the likes of a deer or reindeer, for example. Meanwhile, the words deer and reindeer occur frequently in the Bible, some of which have the meaning of the female body.

Intertextuality is a hermeneutical strand of poststructuralism. In biblical scholarship, since Hays’s influential work Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul (1989), the term has also been employed to refer to a later text’s interpretation of an earlier text. Regrettably, however, for the past three decades, scholars have failed to come to a consensus on how to understand and apply intertextuality in New Testament studies. Though both literary and biblical studies employ the same term intertextuality, their conception and application of intertextuality differs substantially. Accordingly, this essay will sketch how literary and biblical studies have perceived and utilized the concept of intertextuality. Following this, the study will evaluate these approaches. Finally, the present essay will conclude with a proposal for how to relate intertextuality and New Testament studies that is a cogent middle ground between poststructuralism and biblical studies, thereby compensating for both sides’ deficiencies.

King Asa’s funeral description is the longest in the book of Chronicles and unique in the number of specific details it includes. Scholars generally see Asa’s funeral in 2 Chron. 16.14 in a positive light despite the negative tone of the preceding verses. Certainly, Chronicles is not afraid to portray a Judean king in both positive and negative terms (e.g., Manasseh). However, using an adapted synchronic and diachronic methodology for assessing inner-biblical connections, this study identifies and evaluates the shared language found in Exod. 30.25, 1 Chron. 9.30, and 2 Chron. 16.14. The study reveals a recurrent allusion that is both 1) an indication that post-exilic temple workers followed the Torah and 2) an indictment against using a special anointing oil for honoring the dead instead of honoring God.
