PKDREJ is a testis-specific protein thought to be located on the sperm surface. Functional studies in the mouse revealed that loss of PKDREJ has effects on sperm transport and the ability to undergo an induced acrosome reaction. Thus, PKDREJ has been considered a potential target of post-copulatory sexual selection in the form of sperm competition. Proteins involved in reproductive processes often show accelerated evolution. In many cases, this rapid divergence is promoted by positive selection which may be driven, at least in part, by post-copulatory sexual selection. We analysed the evolution of the PKDREJ protein in primates and rodents and assessed whether PKDREJ divergence is associated with testes mass relative to body mass, which is a reliable proxy of sperm competition levels. Evidence of an association between the evolutionary rate of the PKDREJ gene and testes mass relative to body mass was not found in primates. Among rodents, evidence of positive selection was detected in the Pkdrej gene in the family Cricetidae but not in Muridae. We then assessed whether Pkdrej divergence is associated with episodes of sperm competition in these families. We detected a positive significant correlation between the evolutionary rates of Pkdrej and testes mass relative to body mass in cricetids. These findings constitute the first evidence of post-copulatory sexual selection influencing the evolution of a protein that participates in the mechanisms regulating sperm transport and the acrosome reaction, strongly suggesting that positive selection may act on these fertilization steps, leading to advantages in situations of sperm competition.

In vitro fer tilizability and subsequent developmental competence of inbred RFM/Ms mice, which have high incidence of myeloid leukemia by radiation, was studied. When response of RFM/Ms females to various amount of eCG (1.25-10.0 i.u.) In the past few decades, the development of techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and in vitro embryo culture (IVC) for many mammalian species has significantly contributed to clinical intervention in human and endangered species infertility, as well as the animal science of domesticated and laboratory animals [1]. Of these mammals, mice are most frequently used as models for reproductive physiological studies. Although many mouse strains have been bred for specific purposes of research, their reproductive profiles vary among strains [2]. In vitro handling, such as IVF and IVC is not necessarily possible in all inbred strains of mice [3][4][5][6]. The feasibility of IVF and IVC of a particular mouse strain has to be determined on a strain by strain basis in most cases.We report the ability to manipulate gametes and embryos from an inbred RFM/Ms mouse strain that has often been used in the study of leukemia [7,8]. In spite of the importance of this strain in radiation biology and immunology due to its high incidence of myeloid le uke m ia a ft er r adi at io n exp osu re [9,10 ], t he reproductive profile and gamete/zygote handling in vitro have not been studied. Therefore, we examined this strain's ovulatory response to hormone stimulation and the fertilization and developmental competence of RFM/ Ms gametes and zygotes in IVF and IVC including comparison with C57BL/6J gametes and embryos. In this article, we summarise the principal research findings of the distinguished Polish scientist, Professor Halina Krzanowska, related to the genetic control of mammalian gamete quality. During the early stages of her career, Halina Krzanowska conducted experiments on poultry and then she moved on to work on mice. All her research on gamete quality was conducted on the research models, consomic, congenic and recombinant inbred strains, which Krzanowska developed herself. These models differed mostly in their fertility. Krzanowska was one of the first researchers to demonstrate the influence of chromosome Y on the morphology of mice spermatozoa. She also showed that the uterotubal junction is in vivo a selection barrier for the morphologically abnormal spermatozoa, whereas in vitro abnormal spermatozoa are able to participate in fertilization, the function of selective barrier being performed by the granulosa cell layer and the zona pellucida. Another model which Krzanowska produced were chimaeras, which she used to find out if the percentage of abnormal spermatozoa and the efficiency of fertilization are determined by germ cells themselves or by environmental factors and she discovered that sperm head shape, the proportion of abnormal sperm and fertilizing capacity are determined mainly by the genotype of germ cells and only minimally by environmental factors.
