Interstitial Lung Disease in Primary Biliary Cholangitis: A Cohort Prospective Study

Abstract: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) has been recognized as an extrahepatic manifestation ofprimary biliary cholangitis (PBC), althoughlimited data are available on its prevalence and clinical significance. Therefore, we evaluated the occurrence and clinical features of ILD in a cohort of PBC patients. Ninety-three individuals without concomitant rheumatic diseases were enrolled in our prospective cohort study. All patients underwent chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). Liver-related and lung-related s… Show more

“…Patients with autoimmune liver disorders, particularly those with primary biliary cirrhosis, exhibit a number of pulmonary function abnormalities [21]. Other investigators have described spirometric values to be normal or mildly reduced [5] [6] [22] [23]. FEF 50 was reduced in 9 of our patients, consistent with small airway dysfunction, confirmed by ventilation-perfusion mismatching seen on lung scans.…”

“…The initial response to antibiotics raised the possibility of infection, exacerbating the underlying ILD, which improved with ceftriaxone and azithromycin. In a prospective cohort study, patients with ILD exhibited a lower prevalence of liver cirrhosis [ 15 ]. In our case, lung findings help determine less chance of liver failure and a transplant in the future as an observation from this cohort study.…”
