Interstitial brachytherapy in soft tissue sarcomas

Abstract: The sequential combination of limited surgery and tumor bed brachytherapy with or without external radiotherapy has been established as an effective alternative to more ablative procedures like amputation. Histologic grade has proven to be a significant factor determining local control.

“…The local control rates and long-term survival of patients with cervical carcinoma Stage IIB treated with a combination of external beam irradiation and intracavitary brachytherapy range from 65% to 75%, respectively [7,15,18,20]. Carcinoma of the cervix Stage IIB has a relatively wide spectrum of disease depending on the degree of parametrial involvement, bulk of the central disease and proliferative or infiltrative nature of the disease qualifying some of these patients to be locally advanced.…”

“…Interstitial brachytherapy with Iridium-192 has been routinely used in a variety of sites such as carcinoma of breast, cervix, vagina, prostate, anal canal, penis and soft tissue sarcomas [7,8,12,33,38]. Transperineal interstitial brachytherapy in carcinoma of the cervix has also been used as an alternative method of improving dose distribution in locally advanced and recurrent cervical cancers, especially in situations where a standard intracavitary application is not possible [2,3,24].…”
