Mobility issue and service continuity represent important challenges for next generation networks. The integration of a satellite segment within a terrestrial network (especially WiMAX) has several advantages in a 4G context. In this paper, we focus on channel reservation mechanisms to ensure quality of service. Primary results show, by means of simulation, the gains and limitations of each mechanism. It is shown that the best results are obtained when the mechanisms are performed by the base stations when the density of users is low. Otherwise, cooperative solutions for which reservations are done by neighboring nodes may improve the performance of the system.

SUMMARYTo achieve a global cellular network, integration among segments offering different coverage (indoor, outdoor and global) must be pursued. Of course, the possibility to hold the call switching among different segments must be guaranteed. Hence, efficient algorithms to perform intersegment handover (ISHO) must be implemented.The paper aims at analysing some ISHO procedures developed in the frame of some European projects and other proposed in the literature, in a scenario with satellite and terrestrial segments interworking to achieve a worldwide cellular coverage.Performance evaluation will be carried out for different system configurations utilizing a dynamic satellite constellation simulator in the time domain. The impact of the distance user-gateway on performance will be addressed. For each procedure, the execution delay and its complementary cumulative distribution have been evaluated for different constellation geometries at different distances from the gateway.

Abstract-Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites will work as an important component in future data communication networks. LEO satellites provide low end-to-end delays and efficient frequency spectrum utilization, making it suitable for personal communication. However, due to high satellite speed, the ongoing communication using LEO constellations experiences frequent handover. In this paper, we provide an up-to-date comprehensive literature survey on proposed handover schemes for LEO satellite systems. We also present a detailed classification of handover schemes based on a common framework. We first classify the schemes into link layer and network layer handover schemes. Link layer handover schemes are further classified into three categories: (a) spotbeam handover schemes, (b) satellite handover schemes, and (c) ISL handover schemes. Spotbeam handover schemes are categorized based on channel capacity, handover guarantee, and handover prioritization techniques. Network layer handover schemes are also classified depending on connection transfer strategies. Finally, we compare the handover schemes using different Quality of Service.
