“…Contrary to this, Godthåbsfjord experienced distinct high temperatures in 2010 (Mortensen et al, 2018). Where Khazendar et al (2019) attribute cooling of the regional heat source (i.e., dSPMW) to a slowdown and thickening of Jakobshavn Isbrae in Disko Bay, our observations suggest that a more voluminous BBPW in Disko Bay may be responsible for the cooling by squeezing dSPMW to a deeper depth range.…”

“…The record is sparser for 2016, but it is sufficient to indicate that increased thickening occurred during the winter of 2016-17 as the ice tongue advanced and the glacier slowed. As a result, just prior to the summer speedup in 2017, the terminus region was ~35 meter higher than the previous summer (see also Khazendar et al, 2019). Winter thickening continued to outpace summer thinning 195 so that by March 2019, surface elevations near the terminus were only 10 to 20 m lower than those observed during spring of 2011.…”

“…With this slowdown, the terminus region transitioned from ~15 m/yr of net annual thinning to ~15 m/yr of thickening (Khazendar et al, 2019). This slowdown coincided with a period of increased surface mass balance and cooler atmospheric and ocean temperatures Khazendar et al, 2019;Mouginot et al, 2019). While it is clear that seasonal variation modulates Jakobshavn Isbrae's flow speed, the causal links to underlying atmospheric and oceanic forcing remain poorly understood.…”

“…For example, benthic foraminiferal data from Disko Bay in western Greenland show a close correlation between Jakobshavn Isbrae terminus positions over the last 100 years and subsurface ocean temperatures (Lloyd et al, ). Further, modern observations indicate widespread terminus retreat and thinning occurring when climate conditions promote elevated submarine melt rates (Catania et al, ; Holland et al, ; Rignot et al, ; Straneo & Heimbach, ) and slowing and thickening occurring when subsurface ocean waters cool (Khazendar et al, ). However, no simple relationship exists between ocean and ice that is shared across glacier‐fjord systems in Greenland (Slater et al, ; Straneo et al, ).…”
