Maize (Zea mays L.) yields have advanced through breeding complemented with evolving management technologies including plant density (PD) and macronutrient fertilizer inputs. Little is known about management-induced changes in plant uptake or allocation of nutrients other than macronutrients. Therefore, impacts of both PD and N rate at three levels (low, medium, and high) on Ca, Mg, and micronutrient partitioning (for pertinent plant organs at six growth stages) were investigated at four environments in Indiana. Grain Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn contents at maturity were primarily influenced by N rate, while the PD ´ N rate interaction influenced those of Mn and Cu. At the whole-plant scale, PD and N rate significantly influenced all nutrient contents, and vegetative-stage nutrient accumulation averaged 91% (Ca), 51% (Fe), 47% (Zn), and 73% (Mn, Mg, and Cu) of corresponding nutrient contents at maturity. During the vegetative phase, three modes of leaf vs. stem nutrient partitioning were: (i) preferential allocation of Mg and Zn to stems; (ii) preferential allocation of Fe and Ca to leaves; and (iii) isometric partitioning of Cu and Mn. Isometric nutrient concentration patterns between Mg and Zn were documented in leaf, stem (vegetative phase), and ear (reproductive phase). Early-reproductive-stage nutrient partitioning from plant to ear was greatest for Zn and Mg and mirrored their respective harvest indices (HIs) at maturity. Nutrient HIs, concentrations (grain + stover), and internal efficiencies at maturity were positively impacted by N rate but negatively by PD. Reliable micronutrient requirement estimations for maize under diverse management and yield levels help inform future balanced-nutrient input decisions.

With peat as the growth base the effect of the various combinations of three amounts of magnesium, of three of potassium, of two of lime and two of nitrogen on the grain and the straw crop yields, grown in pots, was investigated.During three seasons the magnesium fertilization did not affect the grain or the straw yield, the weight of the grain, or the rate of maturing in the first year. After the magnesium reserve had been exhausted the annual magnesium fertilization was needed to satisfy the requirements of an abundant crop. The highest level of potassium application together with a double magnesium fertilization rate caused a slight decrease in the yield, as the amount of water soluble salts in the growth base reached a high value. A deficiency in magnesium impeded more strongly the development of the grain crop than that of the straw crop; the maturing of the crop was delayed, and the grains were small. The ratio of potassium to magnesium in the annually renewed fertilization, when both nutrients were being used, did not affect the yield of oats. The amount of nutrients used had a more important significance than the ratio of the nutrients. Increase in the amounts of potassium, lime or nitrogen each had a diminishing effect on the yield if the plants were suffering from a deficiency of magnesium. Together with magnesium these treatments increased both the grain and the straw yields. Without the magnesium fertilization the highest rate of potassium increased clearly the value of the ratio K/Mg in the growth base, and caused a decrease in the yield.

We conducted a field experiment to investigate the effects of white clover living mulch on potassium (K) nutrition and the yield of silage corn. We used a randomized block design with a 2 · 3 factorial arrangement of cropping system and K application treatments. The cropping system treatments were: (1) a white clover living mulch (LM) that had been established 10 months earlier, (2) conventional cultivation with no cover crop (CC). The K application treatments were: (1) no K application (K)), (2) K application at sowing of white clover (K clover ), (3) K application at sowing of corn (K corn ). In the LM treatments, white clover was sown in August 2006. Corn was sown in June 2007. Before the corn was sown, the white clover shoots in the LM treatments were clipped. The three conventional cultivation treatments were then tilled and corn was sown in all treatments using a minimum tillage seeder. In the LM K) treatment, we observed symptoms of K deficiency in corn leaves on 23 July. At the silking stage of corn, the K and N contents of ear leaves in the LM treatments were significantly lower than those in the conventional cultivation treatments. In the LM K) treatment the K content of ear leaves was <1% and the yield of corn shoots was less than that recorded in the other treatments. Multiple regression analyses revealed that K was the nutrient most strongly related to corn yield. These results suggested that white clover LM declined the K nutrient status of corn and as a result decreased the yield of corn.
