Interrelationships Between Pelagic Fishes and Plankton in the Coastal Fishing Ground of the Southwestern Japan Sea

Abstract: Interrelationships between the occurrences of pelagic fishes and plankton in coastal fishing grounds have been studied, in two phases, in coastal waters close to Esaki, southwestern Japan Sea, from April through December, 1970. The first phase comprised a general investigation of seasonal changes in the occurrences of plankton and pelagic fishes; the second phase, of an examination of the interrelationships between distribution of pelagic fishes and zooplankton. The results reveal complicated interrelations. F… Show more

“…Specchi et al (1999) confirmed this hypothesis, verifying the synchronism between the occurrence of the cladoceran and the appearance of anchovy in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic). In contrast, Ogawa & Nakahara (1979) found that high concentrations of cladocerans could produce unfavourable effects on the feeding activity of small planktivores. In the present study, P. avirostris was found in stomach contents mainly at night (Table A1), but it never represented an important prey even if it was abundant at sea, especially in the area where anchovy were caught (> 3000 individuals m -3 ; Table A2).…”

“…In some cases, such conditions may not result in mortality but in avoidance by fish, leading to localised reductions in fisheries (Bhimachar and George, 1950;Ogawa and Nakahara, 1979;Devassy, 1989). A Noctiluca bloom can create a large quantity of mucus, which mechanically damages fish gills or interferes with fish respiration (Subramanian, 1985).…”

“…Many studies have investigated the interrelationship between fishes and zooplankton (Chidambaram and Menon, 1945;Subrahmanyan, 1959;Ogawa and Nakahara, 1979;Harding et al, 2011). The pelagic fishes showed a direct relationship with zooplankton, whereas the mid pelagic and demersal fishes showed a prey-predator relationship in the marine food web.…”
