Interrater and Intrarater Reliability of Cranial Anthropometric Measurements in Infants with Positional Plagiocephaly

Abstract: (1) Background: anthropometric measurements with calipers are used to objectify cranial asymmetry in positional plagiocephaly but there is controversy regarding the reliability of different methodologies. Purpose: to analyze the interrater and intrarater reliability of direct anthropometric measurements with caliper on defined craniofacial references in infants with positional plagiocephaly. (2) Methods: 62 subjects (<28 weeks), with a difference of at least 5 mm between cranial diagonal diameters. Maximal … Show more

“…The following anthropometric parameters, constituting the dependent study variables, were measured: maximal cranial circumference (MCC) [ 43 ], cranial length, cranial width and diagonal cranial diameter taken from the frontozygomatic suture (fz) to the fellow lambdoid suture (lb) [ 44 ]. Interrater and intrarater reliability of cranial anthropometric measurements has been previously published [ 45 ]. From these data, the next qualifiers were calculated.…”

“…The CVAI and comparable measurements of the head with mechanical measuring devices were evaluated and showed high intra-and inter-rater reliabilities [37]. Based on 3D radiographic data, the UCSQ uses four points (exocanthion and porion on both sides of the reconstructed skin surface).…”

“…We focused on CA in this study; nevertheless, the severity is defined using CVAI in other previous studies [3,15,19,20] (e.g., mild, 5-6%; moderate, 7-9%; severe, 10-13%; and very severe, >14%) [3,15]. The median CVAI exceeded 10% in both the natural-course and CHT groups in this study 2, indicating a severe plagiocephaly.…”
