Interproximal periodontal intrabony defects

Abstract: The purpose of the present investigation was to study the distribution of interproximal periodontal intrabony defects as related to age, sex and localization, and to examine the relationship between some possible etiological factors and the occurrence of intrabony defects. A total of 209 adult patients presenting for dental treatment at the Royal Dental College in Arhus participated in this study. The patients were subjected to a questionnaire and were examined clinically and radiographically. All osseous defe… Show more

“…It is of interest to examine interdental brushes, since they enter the interdental regions that can harbor high numbers of bacteria [11]. The results of the present study correspond to those of the study by Quirynen and coworkers [18], but our findings showed much higher numbers of putative pathogens and anaerobes in general.…”

“…According to recent findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, half of adults aged 30 or older have periodontitis and severity of bone defects increases with age. [40] No significant difference was observed between the prevalence in males and females in this study as was also implied by Indurkar and Verma[41] and Nielsen et al [42]…”

“…Shapira, et al 26 (1995) found CEJ-ABC distances in the maxilla greater than in the mandible (p=0.0001). Other studies 7,9,13,20 also found BL more prevalent in maxilla. Shapira,et al 26 (1995) suggested that this difference was due to the different growth pattern or bone composition of the maxilla when compared to the mandible.…”

“…However, since the erupting teeth were not included in the evaluation, the higher prevalence of BL in the distal aspect should be attributed to other possible factors. Hull, et al 10 (1975) and Nielsen, et al 20 (1980) found that self-administered oral hygiene at distal surfaces is more difficult than at mesial sites. These findings were also reported by Nevertheless, others studies 6,9,15 found BL more frequent at mesial surfaces than at distal ones.…”
